OBJECTIVE

To understand that leadership is not defined by a position, but instead is defined by the influence that one has towards people around them.

CONTENT

BIBLICAL LEADERSHIP

  • A Biblical leader is a person of character and competence who influences a community of people to achieve a God-honoring calling by means of the power of Christ.
  • God calls us to do something more regarding leading His people. He calls us to love one another, lead with humility and compassion, remain accountable to higher standards than the ones set by the world and to never stop learning.
  • There are 5 distinctives of biblical leadership:
    Character — set of moral qualities that distinguishes one person to others. Three images directly connected to who Jesus was and how He led — servant, steward and shepherd. Character creates the credibility for a leader to be respected and trusted and to earn the right to influence others.
    Calling — biblical leaders must not only concern themselves with how to lead but they must also address why they are leading/for what purposes that comes from God to us (not the other way around). When we respond to God’s calling, vision will begin to develop within the hearts and minds of the leaders and rooted in a call from God not in self-centered ambition. Calling is the force that drives and inspires biblical leaders to influence.
    Competence — Just as the character is vital to leadership, so are skillful hands (competence). Outer competence is related to inner character.
    Community — The outcome of biblical leadership is always about transforming the lives of human beings, to redeem and restore His people. Do life with the people we lead.
    Christ — the perfect example of a leader. As leaders, seeking to lead like Jesus, we must also desire to assimilate His character into our lives. May Jesus be our inner fuel to guide us as biblical leaders. All credit goes to Jesus and not us. Cultivating a personal relationship with Jesus is huge in our ability to continue to lead others towards Him.

LEADING REGARDLESS OF YOUR POSITION

  • Leadership is not just a position or a title but also God’s calling for us to influence the lives of our surroundings.
  • The values of leadership are needed regardless of our position and where we are. We can be a leader anywhere: may it be at our home, workplace, ministry, etc. Qualities such as honesty, courage, integrity, humility, perseverance and decisiveness shows our ability to lead, regardless of the title or position that we hold.
  • “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”- 1 Timothy‬ ‭4‬:‭12‬ ‭NIV‬‬
  • Anyone can become a leader in God’s kingdom. We don’t have to wait until we have everything figured out or put together. Start from where we are and see what God does. He will take us from where we are to where we need to be.
  • Leaders never outgrow the desire to learn. There is always more to learn, more places to grow, more ways to share God and be a positive influence wherever we are.

REFLECTION/DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  • Do you think that leaders are “born” or “made”? Are there certain characteristics or traits you seem to have been born with that have either helped or hampered your leadership? Are there areas of your leadership you have set out to improve consciously? How would you like your leadership style and skills to improve?
  • What were the values that Jesus’ leadership exemplified? As you examine your own leadership, what are the values that motivate the decisions you make, the priorities you set and the ways you relate to people?
