OBJECTIVE
To learn the difference between being a spectator and a participant in a church setting, and learn from Nehemiah on how he stepped up to contribute with his expertise.
CONTENT
SPECTATOR VS PARTICIPANT
- As mature Christians, we are encouraged not only to be the receiver of God’s words, but also to apply them in our daily lives. In many instances to apply God’s words also means stepping up to contribute to our circle of influence
- The difference between spectator vs participant is not in the acceptance of God’s words, but in the action and moving in faith.
- Growth can only be spurred with our actions. If professing as a Christian, going to the church but followed up by inaction makes one a good Christian, the condition of the world today should really frighten us considering Christian has been the largest religion for quite a while.
FROM CUP-BEARER TO GOVERNOR
- We are created in mind with a purpose, a purpose that’s bigger than ourselves, and often this manifests in the form of conviction. Nehemiah was convicted to help the Jews restore their Jerusalem walls and Judah, God already equips Nehemiah with the gifts, strength, and the necessary leadership skills that will allow Him to act out boldly in faith.
- For Nehemiah, His sense of belonging and heart for his people are the very things that drive him to become active in faith. God blesses His efforts because not only He has the right motivation, He also relies on God to bring about the change. Not only were they able to rebuild the wall in 52 days despite navigating many stresses and challenges, Nehemiah was able to bring the Jews back to our God. It was his obedience that led to the spiritual revival of his country.
- What we could learn from Nehemiah is ultimately this: He focuses on accomplishing God's plans and purposes instead of settling for comfort. Instead of questioning and waiting for others more “qualified” for the job, Nehemiah was sure of his calling and certain that God was at work in him and through him.
- While we may find ourselves in a position like Nehemiah, it is important to continue to be humble and seek God’s guidance. Ultimately, whatever God wills will happen, even with our inaction. Understanding that we are His vessels and the privilege to be used by God for His glory not only takes off the burden we put on ourselves, but gives us the confidence to step forward as Nehemiah did.
- Our abilities are gifted to us not just to advance ourselves, but to advance His Kingdom. Imagine how impactful it can be when everyone around us is inspired to move like Nehemiah.

- What makes you reluctant the most about stepping up to your role, especially in church? Do you think of it as a responsibility or a burden, why? To put into perspective, think of how your church can grow significantly more if everyone is moved to step up boldly in faith.
